I feel for the engineer- it’s the most helpless feeling in the world to be sitting at the controls when their ain’t a damn thing you can do about it.

A lot of those folks get PTSD from accidents.

Wow, I don’t know what that guy was thinking...

But also I don’t get how they can have unrestricted traffic driving down the train track when trains are coming and not have it be a disaster. Even if the train is slowing down to 5mph or something it seems like it’s asking for trouble.

Street-running trains are actually way more common than you’d think and incidents are fairly rare. Most states have at least one location with street-running trains. Often, like with La Grange, it’s the result of the town forming around the railroad tracks during the 19th century, as the railroad was the main source of transportation and commerce for the town. Then with the arrival of the car the towns had to either relocate their town center or find a way for trains and cars to cohabitate the same space.

Yeah, I know they aren’t uncommon. I’d just expect some signalling mechanism to tell people not to enter the shared area when a train is coming, or even a flag man or something to clear the way.

That’s fair. There’s gates at the two main intersections, but the others are just stop signs. It is a 10 MPH speed zone for the trains though.

that’s just asking for trouble having a train run down the middle of a street.

but still, the driver of that ute needs to pay more attention to where he is and what he was doing

Street runner trains are actually surprisingly common and rarely have incidents. Check my reply to facw for a bunch of photos
